Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing content to appear as direct answers in response to user queries - across featured snippets, voice search, and AI-generated answer engines.

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of optimizing content to win direct answer placements across all types of answer engines - including Google's featured snippets, Siri/Google Assistant voice search responses, and the newer generation of AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude.

AEO predates the current AI search wave. It emerged as search engines began displaying direct answers above ranked results - reducing click-through to the underlying pages. The core insight is that users increasingly receive answers without clicking through to a source, so brands must optimize to be the answer rather than just ranking for it.

The current AI era has dramatically expanded AEO's scope. AI answer engines don't just show snippets - they synthesize comprehensive responses from multiple sources, cite those sources, and recommend next steps. This creates both a challenge (getting cited in synthesis rather than just ranking) and an opportunity (there's no position one to dominate - multiple brands can be cited in a single answer).

AEO and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) are closely related but distinct. AEO is the broader category; GEO is specifically focused on generative AI systems. All GEO is AEO, but not all AEO is GEO - traditional featured snippet optimization is AEO but not GEO.

Examples

  • Structuring content to directly answer specific questions in a concise, quotable format
  • Using FAQ schema markup so AI systems can extract question-answer pairs
  • Writing clear, factual definitions for key terms in your industry
  • Creating How-To content with structured steps that AI engines can extract
