AI Citation Rate

AI Citation Rate is the percentage of relevant AI-generated answer engine responses that reference, mention, or cite a specific brand, domain, or piece of content.

AI Citation Rate is the fundamental measurement of AI visibility: out of all the AI-generated answers relevant to your brand or category, how many of them include a reference to your brand? A citation rate of 25% means your brand appeared in one out of four relevant AI answers.

Citation rate is calculated by running a defined set of prompts through AI answer engines and measuring the percentage of responses that mention the target brand. The quality of the prompt set matters enormously - prompts should represent the actual informational queries your target audience asks, not just branded queries about your company.

Citation rate varies significantly by AI engine. A brand may have a 30% citation rate on Perplexity (which retrieves live web content) and only 10% on ChatGPT (which relies more on training data). Tracking citation rate by engine reveals which systems know and favor your brand and which don't.

Citation rate is distinct from citation quality. A brand cited once in a brief mention and a brand recommended as the primary solution in an answer both count as citations, but their commercial value differs dramatically. The Mentd. platform tracks both citation rate and mention type - primary recommendation vs. passing mention vs. one of many options.
