Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing a brand's content, structure, and entity presence to appear in AI-generated answers produced by systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google's AI Overviews. Unlike traditional SEO, which optimizes for ranked blue-link results, GEO targets the synthesized answers that AI systems generate directly in response to user queries.

AI answer engines synthesize information from multiple sources to generate a single, comprehensive response. Whether your brand is cited in that response - or a competitor is cited instead - depends on how well your content signals factual authority, entity clarity, and topical relevance to the AI system.

GEO encompasses both technical and content disciplines: ensuring AI crawlers can access your content (access optimization), structuring pages for AI comprehension (schema markup, entity clarity, heading hierarchy), building external citation signals that influence AI training data (off-page GEO), and monitoring your brand's citation rate across AI platforms.

The term GEO distinguishes AI-specific optimization from traditional SEO and from the narrower AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) category. While AEO historically focused on featured snippets and voice search, GEO specifically addresses the new generation of generative AI systems that produce synthesized, multi-source answers rather than returning ranked documents.
