AI Share of Voice (AI SOV) is a competitive measurement that tracks what percentage of AI-generated answers in a given category or topic area reference a specific brand, compared to how often competing brands are referenced. It is the AI-era equivalent of traditional share of voice metrics used in advertising and PR.

To calculate AI Share of Voice: define a set of prompts representing your category's key questions, run those prompts across one or more AI engines, count how often each brand is cited in the answers, and express each brand's citation count as a percentage of total citations. A brand cited in 20 out of 100 answers when competitors collectively generate 80 citations has a 20% AI Share of Voice.

AI Share of Voice differs from AI citation rate in scope. Citation rate is absolute - it measures how often your brand appears in relevant answers. Share of voice is relative - it measures how your citation rate compares to competitors. A citation rate of 30% sounds strong but may represent a weak share of voice if competitors average 60%.
